Advancing Agri-Food Competitiveness through Simplification: Unpacking the Food and Feed Safety Omnibus

The Food and Feed Safety Omnibus package seeks to boost the competitiveness and innovativeness of the agricultural sector by promoting regulatory clarity and coherence, removing overlaps, and streamlining authorisation procedures. However, to ensure that these measures produce meaningful simplification and tangible benefits for innovators and farmers alike, it is imperative that their voices of industry are given the chance to contribute to the legislative debate.

In this roundtable discussion, industry leaders will convene with policymakers and other stakeholders to unpack the implications and opportunities of this package for the future of the EU agrifood sector. Participants will share their views on how simplification measures and accelerated procedures can strengthen the competitiveness of farmers and innovators, examine the practical implications of the proposal, and discuss how the legislation can be further improved upon.

Key guiding questions will include:

  • In what ways is the current plant protection framework hindering the competitiveness of the agrifood sector?
  • How can approval procedures be fast-tracked to accelerate market access for crop protection innovation?
  • Beyond legislative changes, how can procedures be made more efficient and innovation-friendly with specific regard to EFSA and other EU agencies?
  • What elements of the Omnibus proposal should be adjusted to better support European solution providers and farmers?
